Overactive bladder (OAB) is a condition which increases the urgency and frequency of the need to urinate. In many cases, this may cause episodes of incontinence. A large number of people live with these symptoms — around one in six of the overall US population according to one survey (The National Overactive Bladder Evaluation1), with older people being most affected.
A person experiencing urinary incontinence may be fully aware of their urgency but unable to control their bladder, resulting in leakage before they are able to reach the bathroom. Excessive frequency is defined as urinating more than eight times a day. Incontinent episodes can be frustrating and embarrassing, and ultimately affect quality of life.
